A HISTORY OF PROFESSIONALISM
In 1931, during the heart of the Great Depression, Dave Percy and Harry Siegal found themselves unemployed and with few prospects for work. So, they opened a little fix-it and locksmith shop at 107 W. Hill Street in downtown Champaign (which is now a parking lot). They made their living sharpening reel lawn mower blades, repairing luggage and umbrellas, and duplicating keys. In 1945, they hired Stan Haney, a 14-year-old entrepreneur whose primary motivation was earning enough money to buy a car. Stan bought his car — and ten years later, he bought Dave & Harry Locksmiths.
Denny Birt was hired by Mr. Haney in 1972, and in 1985 he purchased the business, which is now located at 116 East University Avenue in Champaign. Jim Young was hired by Mr. Birt in 1997 and in 2013 purchased the business as well as Tri-Color Locksmiths in 2017. Do you offer same day service?
Yes. Call us by 12:00 noon. We can usually perform your service on the same day.
Can I order products through the mail?
Yes. It seems a little slow this day and age, but it still works. You can send your order to Dave & Harry Locksmiths, Inc. 116 E. University Avenue, Champaign, Illinois 61820.
Can you supply key blanks?
We will supply key blanks to locksmiths and in-house locksmiths for commercial, industrial, and institutional customers.
What are some of the better brands of school locks?
Good question. Schlage Locks, Von Duprin, Exit Devices, and LCN Door Closers are the brands we recommend.
For lockers, we recommend Locker Locks by Master Lock. There are several models with various prices to choose from.
Can you supply master keying systems?
We can set up a system, cut the keys, send you a bitting list for your in-house locksmith, or key the locks on-site with our own technicians.
